Debating and Public Speaking

Home > Co-curricular > Debating and Public Speaking

Throughout the year there are several opportunities for students to speak or read publicly at Trinity College assemblies or religious ceremonies. Students can also participate in public speaking or debating competitions after school hours.

Trinity College Oratory Competition:  Students across the school write a speech based on a set topic, then present it during their English classes as part of developing their skills for Oral Language. The ‘best speaker' from each class is selected and each year level then holds a ‘speak off' where the nominated orators present their speeches in front of their peers. English teachers then select the best two speakers from each year level to participate in the final of the Trinity College Oratory Competition. Students from Years 7 and 8 compete in the Junior section; those in Years 9 and 10 in the Intermediate section; whilst those in Year 11 and 12 are part of the Senior competition.

Debating and Public Speaking - Outside the school, opportunities exist for students to enter into competitions which could include.

  • Debating:  Trinity College habitually enters several teams from all Year levels into the Debating Association of Victoria (DAV) competition where our teams get to compete in Geelong against several schools from Geelong, as well as schools from Colac and Warrnambool.
  • Lions Youth of the Year:  This Annual Competition is conducted by local Lions Clubs where the winner at the local level can progress through district and region finals, to compete at State level.
